How digestion system work and how to improve digestion?

How digestion systems work?

We born with mouth and teeth to break down the food into other substances that our bodies can use. This is called digestion so that our bodies can use it to absorb the nutrients from the food. The digestion system journey start at the mouth and after we swallow, the food journey will start through the four main organs.

It starts through ‘Oesophagus’, then ‘Stomach’, into ‘Small Intestine’ and ‘Large Intestine’. This is what we called the digestion system.

When the food passed through our mouth into our stomach, the digested food is absorbed into the bloodstream in the small intestine. The excess water is absorbed back into the body in the large intestine, together with any undigested food passes out as faeces when we go to the toilet through our anus.

There are two main parts of the organs also play an important part in digestion:

The Liver – helps the digestion of fat and oil (lipids) with production of bile.

The Pancreas – helps to speed up the digestive reactions by the biological catalysts called digestive enzymes.

The fact is even we used our teeth to break food into small pieces, but they are still too large to be absorbed by the body. Enzymes are the biological catalysts can help break down food quickly and chemically into really small particles before it can be absorbed. Enzymes are just special proteins to help our digesting system to break food down into small molecules. Different Enzymes can break down different nutrients:

Amylase and Carohydrase Enzymes break down starch into sugar. Carbohydrase Enzymes break down starch into sugars. Starch digesting Enzyme from saliva is digested to sugar, and it begins taste sweet.

Protease Enzymes break down proteins into amino acids. Digestion of proteins in the stomach is helped by stomach acid, which is strong hydrochloric acid. This also kills harmful microorganisms that may be in the food.

Lipase Enzymes break down fats and oils (lipids) into fatty acids and glycerol. The Liver produces Bile, will help the small intestine to digest fat. Bile breaks the fat into small droplets that we easier for the Lipase Enzymes to work on.

Any food substances that are not digested are minerals; vitamins and water are already small enough to be absorbed by the body.

There are two main processes that happen in the digestive system. They are Absorption and Egestion.

Absorption – digested food molecules are absorbed in the small intestine and into our bloodstream, which carried around the body to where they are needed.

Egestion – Excess water is absorbed back into the body in the large intestine. What is left then is undigested food. This is stored in the rectum, the lower part of the large intestine, until we are ready to go to he toilet. It then comes out of the rectum through the anus as faeces. This process is called Egestion.
